JOB PURPOSE
The Product Owner — Intelligent Commerce owns the product backlog for one area of that platform (for example a group of data sources, markets or front-end capabilities): what goes into each sprint, how precisely it is defined, how it will be tested, and whether clients use what is released. The role reports to the Head of Product, who owns the overall roadmap and operating model, and works day to day with the collection, data model, engineers and the QA & QC team in Vietnam and India.
The role exists because a client need only becomes an adopted capability when someone stays with it from start to finish. The Product Owner is that person for their area: they turn qualified requests into clear, testable work, keep engineering and QA unblocked, check that the result is correct before a client sees it, and follow up on how it is used. Data accuracy is the product's core promise to clients, and the Product Owner is its first line of defence in their area.
It requires sound judgement about what matters most within a given scope; rigour in writing down exactly what is to be built and how it will be tested; an owner's attitude to every number a client receives; the discipline to follow and improve the team's SOPs across Vietnam, India and Kuala Lumpur; and direct, regular contact with the people who use the platform. It does not require the ability to design or build the technology — but it does require enough fluency to read a schema, understand what an API can and cannot provide, and ask good questions about an estimate.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1/ Backlog & Prioritisation
- Own the product backlog for an assigned area of the platform, kept ordered, refined and ready for at least the next two sprints, and aligned with the roadmap set by the Head of Product.
- Prioritise incoming requests using the team's agreed scoring (value against effort and capacity), protect existing clients before new requests, explain deferrals clearly, and escalate roadmap-level trade-offs to the Head of Product.
2/ Requirements & Work Definition
- Write user stories, data definitions and acceptance criteria precise enough for engineering in Vietnam and India and QA in India to build and test without the author present, following the team's documentation standard.
- Create, classify and route tickets using the agreed work-type taxonomy, priorities and SLAs; keep tickets current and flag gaps in taxonomy or routing rules.
3/ Data Accuracy & Testing
- Own data accuracy for the assigned area: define what "correct" means for each data source against its source of truth, work with QA & QC on test cases and reconciliation checks, and sign off releases only when they pass the release gate.
- Own reported discrepancies from triage to landed fix: reproduce the issue, follow root cause through with engineering, draft the client explanation with Account Management, and log the fix that prevents recurrence.
4/ Delivery & Cross-Team Coordination
- Run the delivery cadence for the assigned area (sprint planning, refinement, reviews and stand-ups) with Project Management, Engineering and QA & QC across three time zones, keeping status visible and escalating blockers early.
- Follow and help improve the team's SOPs, stage gates and hand-offs; propose changes where delivery slows or rework occurs, and support onboarding of newer team members.
5/ Users, Adoption & the Business
- Build a first-hand understanding of internal users (Account Management, Commercial, Analytics, Project Management) and client users (ecommerce, trade marketing, finance) through regular interviews and feedback sessions, and track adoption of each released capability.
- Act as the day-to-day bridge between business stakeholders and the delivery team: explain product and data trade-offs in plain terms, bring client feedback into the backlog, and join client conversations when needed.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
- Sprint delivery & prioritisation discipline: ≥ 85% of committed sprint scope delivered; unplanned work ≤ 20% of capacity. Tracked per sprint and quarterly.
- Requirement quality: tickets returned for clarification ≤ 10%; rework attributable to requirements trending down quarter on quarter.
- Data accuracy: ≥ 95% of discrepancies detected internally before clients report them; median fix ≤ 10 working days; 100% of releases pass the reconciliation gate.
- Requirement-to-release cycle time: elapsed time from a qualified request entering the backlog to a verified release in production, trending down. Tracked quarterly.
- Ticket hygiene & responsiveness: re-routing ≤ 10%; first response ≤ 1 working day; SLA adherence ≥ 90%.
- Adoption & usage: adoption of each released capability at 60 and 90 days, and share of client data consumed through the front-end rather than manual exports. Targets agreed per capability with the Head of Product.
- Stakeholder satisfaction: feedback from Engineering, QA & QC, Account Management and the Head of Product on clarity, responsiveness and reliability. Collected half-yearly.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS / COMPETENCIES
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, economics, engineering, computer science, information systems or a related field. Equivalent practical experience and a strong product track record will be considered.
- Product management or delivery certifications are a plus, not a requirement.
- Fluent written and spoken English. Vietnamese is an advantage; Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia or Thai a plus.
Experience
- 3–5 years in product ownership, product management or business analysis for data, analytics or B2B software products, including at least 2 years as a Product Owner or Product Manager with an agile delivery team.
- Experience owning and prioritising a backlog under real stakeholder pressure, and able to describe what was deferred or descoped, and why.
- A track record of writing user stories and acceptance criteria that remote or distributed teams built correctly from.
- Hands-on involvement in data accuracy or data quality for a paid product: defining checks, testing releases or resolving discrepancies.
- Experience working with engineering and QA teams in more than one country; Vietnam and India a strong advantage.
- Ecommerce or marketplace domain experience in Southeast Asia (Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, Tokopedia, Amazon, brand.com) a strong advantage.
- Prior experience in a fast-moving, start-up-like environment with rapidly changing priorities strongly preferred.
SKILLS / COMPETENCIES
Functional Competencies
- Value-based prioritisation: orders a backlog by client value against effort and capacity, commits to a realistic sprint scope, explains deferrals clearly, and escalates roadmap-level trade-offs rather than absorbing them.
- Specification rigour: turns a fuzzy business need into precise, testable requirements and correctly classified, routable units of work, so teams in another country build the right thing without the author in the room.
- Data-accuracy ownership: treats the correctness of every number a client sees in their area as a personal outcome; defines what "correct" means, makes sure tests and reconciliation prove it before release, and follows discrepancies through to a landed fix and an honest client explanation.
- Delivery coordination: runs the day-to-day cadence from request to release across Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam and India; follows the agreed SOPs and gates, unblocks the team early, and suggests improvements where the process causes delay or rework.
- User & stakeholder insight: knows from direct contact who uses their area of the platform and how, tracks adoption, closes the feedback loop, and explains trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Threshold Requirements:
- Technical fluency: reads a data schema, understands what an API or report export can and cannot provide, follows a data pipeline conceptually, and asks informed questions about estimates. Basic SQL is a strong advantage. Not expected to design or code.
- Tooling: Jira or equivalent, Confluence or Notion or equivalent, BI tools, and spreadsheet fluency for prioritisation scoring and reconciliation checks.
Behavioral Competencies:
- Decisive: makes clear calls on scope and order, and says no or not now with a reason the asker can accept.
- Rigorous: writes things down precisely, notices when a number does not reconcile, and does not accept "done" without evidence.
- Calm under escalation: gives a client with wrong numbers, or a stakeholder chasing a delivery, a clear answer and a date rather than a defense, and tells the Head of Product early.
- Collaborative across functions and cultures: works with engineers in Vietnam and India and stakeholders across the region as peers, and influences without line authority.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and pace: thrives in a high-growth environment where priorities change; states assumptions, asks for clarity when needed, and keeps moving.
